Entitlement is the larva that is eating away at the fabric of our society. It is the attitude of the CEO who takes advantage of the company, investors, and workers while convincing himself that he “deserved” the excessive salary and bonus. It is the attitude of the Wall Street protestor who thinks they “deserve” more while those investing intellectual, physical or monetary capital shouldn’t be benefiting. One of the lies of entitlement is that you can build yourself up by tearing others down. The attitude of entitlement is the opposite of thanksgiving. Entitlement says “I deserve more;” thanksgiving says “I am grateful for what I have.” Entitlement says “Somebody ought to help me;” thanksgiving says “Look at all I have been given.” Entitlement says “There are people who have plenty and they should give some of it to me;” thanksgiving says “I have so much I ought to share some with others.” Entitlement compares their job with others and complains. Thanksgiving appreciates the job they have. Entitlement expects others to promote them. Thanksgiving seizes every opportunity for self-improvement. The hand of entitlement reaches into every bowl to grasp. The hand of thanksgiving is opened in gratitude and generosity. The heart of entitlement complains of what they do not have while the heart of thanksgiving is thankful what they do have. The attitude of entitlement is not exclusive to any class of people; the poor and the rich can both be greedy and feel like everyone owes them. Resentment will never produce contentment and entitlement will never promote thanksgiving.

Today is Veterans Day, a day to honor all those who have served our country. People like my dad. It was 65 years ago today, November 11, 1944, that my dad was sworn into the Navy becoming a Seabee in WWII. After serving his term in the Navy he enlisted in the Army serving in the Korean War. From all accounts, it was in the Korean War that dad gave his greatest sacrifice – his peace of mind. Dad was a 100% disabled American veteran. The tragedy of war that caused his condition is a story for another day. Suffice it to say that dad’s experiences in Korea brought on a complete mental breakdown. After years of shock treatment and therapy dad was determined by the Army to be mentally unable to support himself in society. One psychiatrist told him he was not fit to ever have children. When dad responded in anger by pulling a blade on the doctor he unknowingly proved the doctor’s point. But regardless of all the psychological diagnosis, children are not a product of psychology but biology and while his mind was messed up dad’s biology still worked. As far as we know I am his only biological child and that was probably for the best. Dad did not talk a lot about the war but I spent my childhood experiencing the pains of war through him. He told me very few stories about his time in the service, I mostly pieced them together from his life. Much of my childhood was spent wondering when his hair trigger temper would go off, watching the bus stop looking for to him return from weeks at the VA hospital, or waiting for the bar to close so we could go home. He was not a perfect dad but he was my dad and I believe he was doing the best he knew how. My mom says he probably loved me more than anything else in his whole life; I would say that his love of his country came in close second. It actually seems to me that dad gave the best of his life for his country but I don’t mind that I had the left-overs.

Dad exercised the right he fought for to express his opinions. When I was younger he would write rambling letters to newspapers and politicians. When talk radio was introduced dad could not have been happier. Everyday he listened and everyday he called (the local station had to make a rule you could only call once a day mainly for my dad). Sometimes the things he said made sense only to him but he loved making them known. Dad believed in the right of citizens to have their opinions heard. That dad’s opinions were sometimes mixed up harkened back to the price he paid to help protect the right of others to make their opinions known. Dad would start talking about one subject then when he wanted to go on to something else he would simply announce with his common connective “…that’s another thing…”

This is just a blog about different stuff. Each one identified as “…that’s another thing.”
